We saw an introduction and generic pattern for Patiala last week in Part I

I had drafted a presentation in powerpoint and have saved them as PNG files and uploaded the same.

Patiala Salwar Part II Pattern Files Presentation


This week we shall see how to draft a Pattern using custom measurements
You would need the following measurements

1. Pant Height
2. Crotch Depth ( This depth will be more than fitted silhouette depth as it is loose fitting; So add 4-5 inches to it)
3. Hip Round
4. Leg Opening (as desired; min 18-20 inches recommended)

Hello Everyone,  


I had promised to start my series of tutorials from today. Unfortunately my daughter is down with viral fever and hence i wouldn't be able to sit and sew. Hence thought that instead of postponing it entirely to next week. I shall give a brief about what it is and what are all the requisites etc and next week get hands on with it. Hope it is ok with all of you out there. Thanks for understanding. 


What is Patiala Salwar? 


 A Patiala salwar (also called a pattian walee salwar) is a type of female trousers which has its roots in Patiala City in the Northern region of Punjab. Though it originated there its popularity spread all over India. Only few seasons back it was the hot trend in all metros. Apart from my style statement, the reason for its popularity is the 'Comfort' factor. It is just so comfy to wear and get on with your chores (business/personal).

Patiala Salwar as you can see above has lot of pleats to give it the bulky drape and hence requires 3.5 to 4 metres depending on your seat round.

Interestingly there are lot of variations to it, the one below is semi-patiala which as you can see has lesser pleats and requires around 3 metres of it

It can be made as drapier as required. Just have a look at the one below and get awed by its fullness

Materials required

Fabric Required - 3.5 to 4 metres (depending on whether you want it to be semi-patiala or full patiala)
Paper for drafting pattern;
Measurement tape;
Long ruler
Pencil/Pen marker

Please Note that the width of fabric should atleast be  42inches. The more the width the lesser yardage required and vice-versa

As of now uploading pattern (generic) and indicating the references for drafting the same. Next week shall draft a new pattern for specific hip round and height. So bear with me for this week, for my daughter's sake!


Waist Band piece is a rectangle whose
Breadth = Your waist + 5 inches.
Height = 6.5 to 8 inches (Basically waist to hip length or the Hip Position in pattern making terms)

The Kali Piece. Width = 8.5" Height  - Ur Pant Height ; Please Note it is on fold; Also keep note of grainline to get correct drape

The Next pattern piece has been labelled as A, B, C & D and hereby list down what each measurement refers to
A-B - Width of fabric  (Atleast 42 inches)
B-D - Crotch depth (ranges from 6.5 - 8 inches)
A-C - Ur pant height (minus waistband height)

Cut 4 pieces of the below pattern (2 opposite sets of 2 pieces each for each leg)

Shall continue with cutting part of it next week along with pinning of pleats and their direction and how to sew it all together to make your own patiala pant.

Tutorials - Yay! - Post Title Suggestions... welcome

I have decided to dedicate every weekend to work on a tutorial which i will share with my fellow bloggers on Monday.

So start the week with a bang. All you fellow Sewists and fashioniastas blow away your Monday Blues and i am searching for a good Title for the post which will obviously have 'Monday' but what will the suffix be to indicate tutorials as well as ones that sound good and rhythmic.

Planning to start of with Tutorials related to Salwars.

Here is a give-away first one would be on Patiala Salwar. I had actually posted one long back on craftster (when i did not own a blog!) , now i realize the photos are not showing up and i have got more clarity of Patiala and its variations, so best bet to start off the tutorial section.
