Drawing and color pencil holder

I am beaming with glee today! why because i managed to find some serious sewing time yesterday. 6 hours to be exact! YES 6 hours, someone please pinch me. My day starts at 5:05 am daily and ends at around 11:00 pm at night ever since we moved to KL. I do not believe in the concept that maid can do the household chores better than the home maker. May be i have Obsessive Cleaning Disoreder and dont trust an outsider to be able to keep my home clean enough,... hmmm i never had a maid in my life , till my in laws moved in with us after marriage! the maid story continued till Adithi turned 2 and from then on i took over the mantle again ! I do complain at times when the frustration peaks, but when i get some sewing time, i don't complain and yesterday was one such day!

Thanks to Chota Bheem DVD which kept Adithi busy for an hour in the evening after returning from school which helped me continue and finish the project

Coming to the project it is a Drawing and Coloring pencils holder with 2 racks of pencil holder slots and a zipper pouch which also acts as a cover for the drawbook enclosure. The zipper pouch can be used to store watercolor boxes, drawing papers if any or any other item which might fall of without closure.

I know this kid  'S'  and like her a lot. She is calm and composed; still has innocence left in her for a kid of her age, in today's world and is also mature enough, rare combination. Her b'day was in November and i had wanted to give a handmade gift (which i do with all kids who are special to me) but couldn't manage time as i had recently moved to our new home , stress regarding Adithi's schooling etc. I was thinking about kids accessories that can be part of the Kids Line i will be launching this month end and the drawing and color pencil folder , pencil  holder , coin pouches are few things that came to my mind. When i think of Drawing and kids, S's name popped up immediately as she is very good at it and attends drawing classes and will be very useful for her so decided to play with my latest obsession Brother Innovis 950 embroidery machine and made a monogram with her initial.

Inside - the book holder and zipper pouch on one side and crayon and color pencil racks on other

Used Adithi's drawing book for measure and template. Blue is S's fav color and hence scouted for the only one in that color i had in stock with my fabric stash! This project took longer than expected. I had initially thought i would be finishing it by noon, but no it continued on and on and i had limited piping fabric in satin added to my woes and hence took more time, but i am happy with the end result though, one minor flaw i noticed was that the lower crayon rack kind of shrinks when filled and disrupts the shape of the bag. may be i need to give more ease to crayon rack in the next folder i will make. I will have to make one for Adithi at the earliest possible, as she had tough time letting this go to someone else other than her, she is so used to her mom sewing for her and only HER and it was hard for her to accept that i made something for someone else, and that too one which she does not have!

Drawing pouch holder on one side and there is also an additional zippered pouch.

Have asked 'S' for feedback on using the folder and plan to incorporate any improvements if needed in my future folder projects.

I found this link to be very useful as i was searching for inspiration for this project; though i created my own template and went about designing and sewing it , as it progressed; however to get the bird's eye view of how to go about the project, the link was indeed very helpful.

Plan to make a few of these to keep the accessories section filled up to start with and i am yet to make the Pattu Paavadai which will make the clothing section..god i wish i had more than 24 hours a day. Can't wait to see the light of the day, when my Clothing and Accessories line  for Kids will be a reality... God Bless !

Thank You Magda!

Magda of MagdaMagda Design Studio sent me this fabulous clutch which is so kitsch in its print and looks so well made that you can hardly figure out it was "homemade"! Remember i got the chance to meet her when i was in her town for cousin's wedding in the month of November (please read the post Surreal Experience for more details!) and she had promised to send me a personalized gift and it was so thoughtful of her to send across such a nice handmade gift. Thank You Magda! Clutches are one of my fashion fetish, and i can't seem to have enough of them!

I know i am bit late in putting up this post, she had sent the clucth about 10 days back! Somehow i have been pre-occupied with domestic front , given it has been Adithi's pre-term break at school and she is at home all day!

Belated Ugadi Subakaanshalu (Best wishes for a happy New Year to Kannadigas / Teluguites / Marathis (Gudi Padwa) Sorry if i have spelt any of it wrongly.

Action Shots of Balloon Dress of my DD's friend!

Guess what! Remember the Balloon dress i made for my DD's friend. It was a bit small for her and did not fit. A fitting issue cropped up after quite sometime. It always bothers me to alter something, especially when i had sewn it in first place.

I tried to do a new bodice (using same tricky fabric with which i made Destiny Balloon frock for my DD) and the fabric did not co-operate at all this time round.

I then made another bodice using left over of my Sister's Ghaghra Choli's Brocade material and after having finished it, my DD said her friend may not like it as she does not like zari worked brocade kind of materials. Oops..god i left it at that for that day (day before yesterday)

Yesterday i ripped open the seams of the original bodice of the dress ( i should have done this a day back and saved myself the time of making 2 new bodices!) and altered it to be a bit larger and reattached the skirt portion to it.

Since it was balloon skirt i had to first rip open the seam joining balloon and lining skirt to get access to the waist seam (Remember i had lined it completely invisible, to make it more professional, which i do with every DD's outfit to make it more comfy on inside as well; but to alter it means a time consuming thing for having to open a lot of seams to get where we want to actually work!)

All's well that ends well - the dress now fit my DD's friend nicely (My DD's happy that made my day)

Everything that happens, happens for good - Due to the reason that i had to cut open the Balloon and lining skirt portion, i had attach a bit more of lining material (which i chose satin) and attached RS to RS of fashion fabric so that seams are visible! Then did  lap seam while joining bit Satin Lining to original lining which comes up at around mid-thigh height!

I am off on a short vacation and hope to be back by Monday or max by wednesday. I have some scheduled posts waiting for you all during this period so Adithis Amma Sews will keep buzzing though Adithi's Amma isn't present physically! See you all soon!

The photo shoot yesterday erased all the strain i under took to re-do the outfit.

Balloon Frock - B'day gift for DD's Friend

Yesterday i had posted about how it was destiny that my DD ended up wearing the dress which i had envisioned as a gift  - Bling Balloon Destiny Frock. Since the bodice fabric played up a bit, decided to switch skirt fabric and retain the dress for DD and make another dress to be gifted. Here is the 'Other' Balloon dress which was gifted to my DD's friend. Since the bodice fabric is plain silk crepe, decided to add element of interest by shirring it

Shirred 2 pieces  one in Lengthwise and crosswise direction and then patched them up. This took lot of time about 2 hours!

The dress is fully lined with cotton. Since little girls are very finicky and don't like anything that pricks, i take lot of time to make sure the dress looks as good on the inside as it does on the outside.

One new thing i tried with this dress is used elastic to gather the balloon skirt at the hem and attaching the fashion fabric, lining fabric of skirt and elastic all in one go

Center Panel in bodice is shirred crosswise and side panels are shirred lengthwise

Close up of how the Balloon Skirt flares when the dress is twirled around!

Here is the reminder snap of what the Bling Balloon Destiny Frock

Hope to get some action pics and plan to make my DD wear her Destiny Balloon Frock on the same day as her friend wears this one and hope to snap them up together !!!

Birthday Gift for my Sister.

My Sister's b'day was on 23rd, remember the little poem (or something similar i had attempted, excuse me its been almost a decade since i wrote a poem!) i dedicated for her b'day.

Here are the snaps at last. The outfit is made of silk cotton and brocade. Do you feel like you have seen this brocade earlier on Adithis Amma Sews. You are bang on. it is left over from my DD's Birthday Ball Gown, which perfectly went in sync with this dark green silk cotton fabric!

Tried drafting a new pattern by manipulating darts and getting the fit in the form of yoke.  Quite happy with the result.

Anyone interested in drafting of this style of kameez / dress, if there any takers, shall post a mini-tute on the drafting part of it.

Cotton Candy Skirt !!!

Cotton Candy known as 'Panjumittaai' in Tamil is the word that came to my mind after finishing this poofy pettiskirt (albeit with just 2 layers as i had only 3 metres of net / tulle fabric - 2 of pale pink and 1 of bright pink)

This is my gift to my daughter for V-Day, albeit bit late, but it is better late than never isn't it. I started making this on VDay (Monday) and ended up finishing it only by Friday, my DD has still not fully recovered from an upset stomach and did not go to school since wednesday. I hope she gets well soon, it hurts to see her suffering, acidity at this age is just horrible, why because she started going to school full day for the past 10 days (before she started taking leave) and had to eat lunch on her own, which she doesn't like doing, and skipped, also feels stressed being at school for the whole day, the transition isn't over yet, anyone who knows pranic healing, please spend few valuable minutes of your time on my DD and wish her to get well soon, even if you aren't skilled healer, please do pray for her as all the good wishes will surely help her get back to normalcy.

Here i am typing this early in morning, i guess 5:30 AM now, will go back and hit snooze button, i squeezed in time to post before she gets up. Will be back to normal sewing days once she is fit and fine!

Next up i have planned to do Katori Blouse Sewing tutorial, hope you gals have checked 'Katori Pattern Drafting Tute' posted earlier

Origami Fabric Boxes

I saw these on Fabric Origami Boxes on Burdastyle and ever since i have been wanting to make them

I have not been able to blog for past 3 days due to my MIL's health. Domestic bliss kept me too busy to pursue the creative side of me; add to that my Darling Daughter is at home full time since her school has closed for Winter Holidays!

Today i did manage to squeeze some time and ended up making these with my DD

I would love to make many such boxes, such a nice way to personalize your gift by wrapping it up this way isn't it? What's more , you can always use up your fabric left over scraps usefully. Hurray i am going to reach out to bundles of my leftover scraps that i have been 'saving' safely for these kind of utility projects... : 0)

Pattu Paavdai's Sattai is getting ready and is last stages, will post the final part of the tutorial by 2moro. Till then do drop in and check out the already posted segments of the Pattu Paavdai Tutorial Part I & Part II

My DD has already gifted these two boxes, the one with rust color flower was given my FIL & Silver flower has been given to my Sister.
